What are the disadvantages of aluminum garage doors?

Aluminum garage doors have four main disadvantages. First, they dent easily because aluminum is much softer than steel, so a basketball or a backed-up bumper can leave a permanent ding. Second, they insulate poorly, with most full-view aluminum-and-glass doors offering R-values below 4, well under what insulated steel doors achieve. That makes them a poor choice for attached garages in hot or cold climates. Third, they cost significantly more than steel, often 2,500 to 5,000 dollars for a single bay and even more for full-view glass styles. Fourth, the glass panels in full-view designs can be a privacy concern and can shatter in high winds. Aluminum is best suited to modern aesthetic designs in mild climates rather than everyday performance.
