Garage Door Handbook

What is better, a belt drive or chain drive garage door opener?

For most homes, a belt drive is the better garage door opener. Belts are 50 to 75 percent quieter than chains, which matters for any garage attached to or under living space. Belts also need essentially no maintenance, while chains need periodic lubrication. Lifting power is identical on equivalent horsepower units. The trade-off is about 50 to 100 dollars more upfront and slightly worse performance in extreme heat or cold, where the belt can stretch or stiffen. Pick a belt drive for any attached garage, especially with a bedroom above, and for any household with light sleepers. Pick a chain drive only for a detached garage, an unconditioned space in harsh climates, or a heavy commercial door where lift force matters most.
