Google5We've had a couple of jobs done by J&K. Their professionalism stands out in the contractor market. They have a receptionist that answers phone calls. They return calls when they say they will, show up when they say they will and clearly define the terms of the contract, including completion times.

Google5J & K Contracting was an awesome company to work with in remodeling my bathroom. Everything was explained at every step of the way. They were always on time and their work was top notch. I would definitely hire them again.

Google1I called J&K Contracting (summer 2018) to repair a leak in my roof that had caused water damage in the master bedroom ceiling. The owner came to inspect and provide an estimate for the repair. I suggested that the water was coming in where the chimney intersects the roof, which was directly over the location of a large water stain in the ceiling. The owner, without ever going up into the attic, assured me that this was not the issue, and instead suggested the cause of the leak was due to soffit damage. I agreed to pay $475 to have someone come out and find and repair the leak. When the two-person crew came to do the repairs, they started by going up into the attic to find the cause of the leak. They informed me that the leak was not do to soffit damage, but instead that water was entering the house through the chimney cap and where the chimney intersected the roof (as I originally suggested to the owner). I was told that in order to repair the leak, the chimney cap would have to be replaced along with the flashing around the perimeter of the chimney (at the intersection with the roof). After the foreman made a quick call to the owner, the estimate went up to $1,605. I was told by the foreman that the job would take 1-1.5 days to finish, and agreed to pay for the repairs. The crew left to pick up supplies, and I left soon after to go to work. When I arrived home for lunch, I was informed that the repairs had been completed. Instead of taking 1-1.5 days, the repairs were finished in around 3 hours. I asked the foreman to let me know the final cost so that I could make payment. I was informed that the final cost was still going to be $1,605, despite the fact that the work took 3 hours instead of 1-1.5 days. I told the crew that I wasn’t going to pay the $1,605 without an itemized cost estimate showing the breakdown of material and labor cost. After another quick call to the owner, I was told that due to the job being finished sooner than originally estimated, the new total amount due would be $1,300. Still not satisfied, I insisted on seeing a breakdown of the material and labor cost for the new estimate. After another call to the owner, I was put on the phone to speak to him directly. The owner was unwilling to provide a breakdown of the costs, and insisted that I pay the $1,300 or he would have the workers take apart the repairs, leaving me without a chimney cap. I refused, and he instructed his crew to begin dismantling the repairs. As I was in the process of looking for another company to come out and do the repairs, the crew foreman knocked on the door and asked me if I would be satisfied if he brought me a breakdown of the estimate. However, at this point I was convinced that I was being treated unfairly, and told him that I wasn’t going to pay the $1,300 regardless. However, with rain in the forecast, I realized that I would be in a difficult position with no chimney cap. I offered to split the difference between the $475 and $1,605 estimates, and ended up paying $1,000 for the repairs. I can’t speak to the quality of their work, which will only become clearer with time. I can say that the crew was very professional. However, I was very unhappy with the way the owner conducted business. I certainly won’t be using the services of J&K Contracting ever again.
